In a recent study by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), Bangalore ranked fifth among all global cities in terms of quality of universities. The ranking is based on six criteria–research intensity; faculty-student ratio; internationalization; citations per faculty; research income; and industry collaboration.

Bangalore is home to more than 40 universities, including such prestigious institutions as the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), National Law School of India University (NLSIU), and Mahatma Gandhi University. The city also boasts several major research institutes, including the International Institute for Information Technology (IIIT), Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Law University (BRLU), and the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS).
