Introduction
When I tell people that I am spending a semester abroad in Bengaluru, India, I usually get one of two reactions. The first is an enthusiastic “That sounds amazing! I’m so jealous!” and the second is a more hesitant “Isn’t that really…different?”
I’ll admit, when I first started researching my options for study abroad, I was definitely in the latter camp. India just seemed so far out of my comfort zone – would I be able to handle the food? The culture shock? The language barrier? But the more I read about the Bengaluru Program, the more intrigued I became.

We take classes on everything from sociology to economics to history, and we also have the opportunity to do fieldwork and internships with local organizations. In addition to all of that academic learning, we’re also living with host families and exploring all that Bangalore has to offer – from its vibrant street life to its beautiful parks and temples.
I’m only a few weeks into my time here, but already I can say without a doubt that this has been an incredible experience. If you’re considering studying abroad but are feeling a little apprehensive about it, I urge you to step outside your comfort zone and give Bengaluru a try – you won’t regret it!
